Congressman Joe Pitts (PA-16) explains his opposition to the movement underway in Washington to strip workers of the right to the secret ballot in the workplace. The misleadingly named “Employee Free Choice Act” would take away the right of workers to vote in private when determining whether or not to form a union, thus opening them up to coercion and intimidation.

I don’t know of ANY corporation that has a secret ballot for shareholders. It’s all very transparent, and I don’t know of anyone that complains about it. Transparency is the enemy of corruption.

So why is it so bad to have an open vote for employees of a company, but good to have an open vote for the owners of a company?

Is corruption in union politics something we should be promoting? Could I have a show of hands on this? (Be sure to cover your eyes before you raise your hands, so you don’t know whether you raised your hand or not.)
