During a day we spent an entire morning with Gubernatorial Candidate Sam Rohrer and his staff, I can honestly say that there is a buzz surrounding Sam’s campaign, particularly because of his character and conviction on policy. In a breakfast meeting of the Lancaster County Action where we heard from various elected officials from the National to the State to the County level giving reports about striving to tighten the belts and decrease the spending in each of their respective governments, Sam Rohrer highlighted his stance that government should only grow in correlation to the economic activity and growth of the state.

As people across the nation and commonwealth deal with one of the toughest economic times in our recent history and are forced to tighten the belts and pay close attention to their own family budgets, why does our government feel that the same rules don’t apply? In fact we have seen the policy on the National and State level that to fix the economic downfall the only solution is to spend more and more. Sam pointed out that in his 17 years in office he has never voted for a tax increase.

At the Republican State Committee Central Caucus straw poll vote it was evident that the climate has warmed towards Sam as the committee realized this David versus Goliath candidate stands strongly on core conservative principles and speaks as a man under deep conviction. As he concluded his speech a committee member asked him about working across the aisle as Sam’s policies are hard conservative stances. Sam’s response? That when we have a leader that stands unwavering on the conservative values and principles, those values resonate with people, Republican and Democrat alike. The problem is that we haven’t had a strong leader that does not waver on those principles. We have not seen a man lead with conviction and true conviction. We are stuck with career politicians who will do and say anything to make it through the next election (e.g. Arlen Specter).

This morning was definitely a morning that gave a lot of insight, to me personally if no one else, into the upcoming race for Governor. This should be an interesting race to watch and see how everything plays out…
